You just had a baby six months ago and now they are learning to crawl, babble words and perhaps starting on solid foods. That’s when you see their first tooth starting to erupt and you wonder “when should I take my baby to the dentist?"
Your Child's First Dental Visit
The American Dental Association recommends you bring your baby in for their first dental visit when their first tooth erupts or before their first birthday. The first visit is what we consider a “happy visit” and consists of baby sitting on mom or dads lap while the dentists at Applewood Dental perform an intraoral and extraoral exam. During this time we evaluate the development of your baby's jaw, tooth eruption, look to see if there is any decay or staining on the teeth and ensure sure all tissues are healthy. If the baby allows we can also do a toothbrush cleaning at this appointment.
We finish the first visit with a discussion on how to brush your baby's teeth, what can be expected during the teething process, good habits to help keep your baby's mouth healthy and any concerns on pacifier use, thumb sucking and bottle use. We are also here to help answer any questions or concerns you may have about your baby's oral health.
The Importance of Being Proactive
Bringing your baby in early to see the Wheat Ridge Dentist at Applewood Dental helps us to be proactive and preventative. Getting your child used to these first “happy visits” will help them to look forward to the dentist, easing dental fear because as they get older they will now know what to expect when they visit our office. Moreover, it is important to bring your child into the office prior to them having any dental pain as this will establish a healthy, trusting relationship.
At Applewood Dental we are proud to see patients of all ages and love seeing your kiddos. We believe these first visits are crucial and we are here to help in any way we can. It is always a good idea to schedule your baby's dental appointments in the mornings or after a nap so they are well rested.
