Plaque, Gingivitis, Tartar, and Oral Hygiene
Do your gums bleed when you floss or brush? Do they feel sensitive at times? Do you have bad breath? A professional teeth cleaning at Applewood Dental in Wheat Ridge can help get your gums back to a healthy state and eliminate those problems.
Plaque is a normal “slime layer” of bacteria that forms on the surfaces of your teeth. Plaque is often yellow or pale white and is sticky. Prolonged plaque buildup on the teeth can lead to irritated, bleeding gums – more formally known as gingivitis. If plaque continues to be left undisturbed, it can calcify and form tartar — also known as calculus — or can become acidic and lead to decay (cavities) of the teeth. Plaque and calculus can both independently lead to halitosis (bad breath), or even worse, recession of the gums, bone loss, periodontal disease, bleeding, or irritated gums. We recommend brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting the dentist at least twice a year to help avoid these dental problems.
After a good cleaning, it is important to continue great oral hygiene at home. We know that if you have a better understanding of the cause of decay, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and halitosis, it will help prevent cavities and gum issues. At Applewood Dental in Wheat Ridge, we help our patients by teaching proper brushing and flossing techniques and guide you through the many choices you have in dental products. Diet and oral habits also play a large role in your oral health, which is why at Applewood Dental we work with a nutritionist to help facilitate any education needs.
We want to be there for you and answer any questions you may have. With good at home care, regular checkups and dental exams, our goal at Applewood Dental in Wheat Ridge is to keep you disease free and your smile looking and feeling healthy!
